Two recent studies reveal how Guided Learning can enhance student performance, alongside the introduction of new Google Classroom features that allow teachers greater control.
Guided Learning is being integrated into Google Classroom to aid students in mastering complex topics through step-by-step guidance rather than simple answers. Research indicates that this method leads to improved learning outcomes, enabling teachers to offer more focused support. The tools are now available for teachers to assign guided lessons, monitor student progress, and gain insights into student interactions with course materials.
In the implementation of Guided Learning, students are coached through complex concepts using practice quizzes and custom visual aids instead of being given direct answers. Studies show that this approach substantially helps students during independent study sessions. Teachers can now allocate these guided lessons and track progress, dedicating more time to personalized support where it is most needed.
Real-world trials and results
Two new studies highlight the real-world benefits of Guided Learning for students and teachers. As part of these findings, Guided Learning is being rolled out in Google Classroom, granting teachers enhanced control over its application in classrooms.
To evaluate the impact of Guided Learning, a randomized controlled trial was conducted with over 300 University of Tokyo students. The trial aimed to assess the added value of Guided Learning beyond conventional study tools. Students were given half a day to study a statistics lesson using standard online resources, with half of them also accessing Guided Learning through the Gemini app.
Rather than seeking quick answers, students engaged more deeply with the material through practice quizzes, step-by-step assistance, and visual aids. Post-test comparisons showed that students using only standard tools improved their scores by 5.3 percentage points, while those with Guided Learning access improved by 8.1 percentage points, achieving 1.5 times the learning gains in a single study session.
Classroom implementation and feedback
Guided Learning is designed to integrate seamlessly into classrooms, allowing teachers to maintain control while offering relevant lesson material. A four-week pilot program conducted with Ark in three UK secondary schools tested Guided Learning across various subjects. Feedback from this pilot was positive; teachers found Guided Learning effectively managed student inquiries during independent work, freeing them to focus on personalized support.
Student feedback was also encouraging, with many expressing comfort in seeking help from Gemini and over half noting it aided them in problem-solving independently. However, some teachers wanted better insights into student engagement with course materials to tailor future lessons and minimize distractions during class. In response, improvements were made, including features that provide educators with insights on student interactions and facilitate focused discussions on curriculum content.
Based on feedback from educators and students, teacher-led Guided Learning is now being introduced globally in Google Classroom. This feature is set to help teachers assign Guided Learning experiences that coach students and offer actionable insights into their progress.
With a foundation in learning science and collaboration with educators, Google aims to continue developing tools that promote active learning and deeper comprehension.
