Mason Greenwood set to depart Manchester United following internal investigation

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood is poised to leave the club after a comprehensive six-month internal inquiry triggered by now-dismissed charges against him. The club has mutually agreed with Greenwood that it’s best for him to pursue his career elsewhere. Despite being cleared of charges involving attempted rape, coercive behavior, and assault, Greenwood has taken responsibility for his actions.

United’s statement emphasized their consideration for the alleged victim’s wishes, the club’s values, and private evidence collected during the inquiry. Although cleared of the initial charges, the club acknowledges the challenges of his return and supports his decision to continue elsewhere.

Having been with the club since age seven, Greenwood has contributed significantly, scoring 35 times in 129 appearances. Expressing gratitude for the club’s support, he intends to improve not just as a footballer, but also as a person and father.

Throughout the internal process, consultations were held with stakeholders, revealing a split among staff about Greenwood’s potential return. While some had reservations, others stressed supporting a player not proven guilty of any crime.

The decision-making process was overseen by CEO Richard Arnold, with an executive panel drawing insights from similar cases across industries. Greenwood’s departure marks the end of a notable chapter, characterized by 35 goals and 129 appearances.
